United Way of San Luis Obispo County strives to foster structural change by addressing root causes in order to safeguard the future of our community. Our focus is on education, income and health – the building blocks for a good quality of life. We are an independent United Way governed by a board of directors with 3 fulltime and 3 part time staff. We convene/chair a number of regional groups (VOAD, Emergency Food and Shelter Program, etc.), operate 211 SLO County and work to support organizations in our county that provide direct services.   Describe the community(ies) your Organization supports. Please be specific in the population and geographic area.  UWSLO works to ensure that all who call our county home have access to the resources they need to thrive. We support the entire county.     PART 2: PROJECT INFORMATION   Describe your proposed project or program. Specify what the requested funds will be used for, the need for this project, the number of people impacted. Include a project plan, if available. The Community Resilience Initiative is the suite of programs aimed at helping us pivot and begin centering racial equity and social justice in the work we do. It supports our 5 major focus areas: education, health, financial stability, disaster preparedness and response, and equity, diversity and inclusion.   Describe the community the project will support. Specify the population, location of services provided, and any other identifiers your proposed project will support. This initiative will support all members of SLO County who are in need of any of the services we provide or fund.   Describe the equity gaps and community needs this project will address. The last 2 years have demonstrated that centering racial equity is critical to our ability to serve all who call SLO county home. We currently lack representation ( of BIPOC, LGBTQA, veterans, people with disabilities, and other marginalized population) on our board, in our staff, volunteers and leadership. Our hope is that by centering the needs of underserved community members and reframing our work through a racial equity lens, we can help co-create "The Beloved Community" in SLO.   In the table below briefly list 2-3 methods of evaluation and indicators of success or measurable outcomes. Methods of Evaluation Indicators of Success / Measurable Outcomes Example: # of BIPOC serving on public boards, committees Example: 10% increase by end of 2021 In the chart below, identify any partnerships/collaborations that are supporting this project, and their roles. We have already begun our Community Resilience Initiative. As funding is made available programs will be launched. We anticipate receiving all funding notification by January 1. Programming will begin in January for our Financial Wellness Series. Development and revision of plans will continue until the close of the 2022 calendar year. At the close of the 2023 calendar year, we will have completed the Financial Literacy programs, finalized a launch plan for the Sparkpoint Center (on Cuesta's Campus) and launched our virtual resilience hub. We hope to have also secured office space for the resilience hub and to house our expanded volunteer base.   Describe your plan for sustainability beyond the City’s one-year award funding, if applicable. By engaging with paid volunteers who represent marginalized and underserved populations in our community we hope to develop a realistic snapshot of the need in our community. These volunteers will be instrumental in helping to provide us with the organizational capacity we need to secure long-term funding solutions, and create the infrastructure to support us as we work to reframe the work we do through a racial equity/social justice lens. We currently lack the staff/resources to develop (let alone maintain) the essential elements of sustainability (strategic plan, fundraising strategy, updated workplace giving campaign strategy, etc.) Our hope is that a year of dedicated financial and volunteer support will allow us to realistically launch and sustain critical community programming.
