MTEP is a division of the Hooperverse https://www.hooperverse.com/, founded by NBA player Nico Mannion https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nico_Mannion and local SLO residents Jeremy Koven and Cameron Katal. Starting with the basketball community, MTEP is empowering existing teams and leagues as well as creating developmental programs and leagues for student athletes. The targeted recipients of the efforts of the MTEP foundation are families with children (boys, girls and non-bianary) from approx. age 8 to 18 from underserved and at risk communities that don’t have the privately funded resources and networks for children to experience the growth, development and self-esteem that comes from playing sports, being part of a team and developing life skills. We are leveling the playing field and democratizing access to athletics, training and team play by providing financial support for high quality athletic and academic resources, athletic equipment, league fees, health, wellness and nutrition. We also seek to partner with like-minded organizations and their communities to create even greater impact together. Recipients and Partners include: The Watts Skill Academy https://wattsskillsacademy.net/ basketball program for boys & girls in South Central Los Angeles, Inglewood College Preparatory https://mobile.twitter.com/theicpschool in Inglewood, CA and the Rise & Achieve Youth Sports https://www.riseandachieveyouthsports.com/ in Santa Maria, CA. Budget Pending final enrollment numbers, the league will consist of 150-200 children with 10 children per team The Make the Extra Pass Foundation would like to offer 60* scholarships to cover the cost of league fees, uniforms, snacks, beverages and other needs for children/families that cannot afford them $520. per child covers all costs pro-rata to be in the league. *Based on enrollment applications and need, if the City of SLO DE&I grant does not fully fund the scholarships for 60 children, the MTEP foundation will look to other funding sources to cover the scholarships and/ or may need to reduce the number of scholarships granted. If less than 60 children apply for the scholarship, we will be able to use the additional funding for items such as: private training sessions and equipment (sneakers, socks, jerseys, etc.), transportation stipend and other resources for the families that did apply. The remaining children/families participating in the league will be paying full fees to cover the remaining operating costs. The Nico Mannion Hooperverse League is a recreational youth basketball league for boys, girls and non- bianary children ages 8-14 years old, located in the city San Luis Obispo, California. With the help of Cheyenne Parker (WNBA), Horace Grant (4 time NBA Champion), and our local basketball experts, Nico and the Hooperverse team are creating an environment where children learn, grow, and develop life skills as students and athletes. The league is designed to be a source of fun and enjoyment for the community’s youth, while building their character and confidence. We strive to teach the youth life lessons that have value beyond the basketball court. As experienced professionals, we are here to lend our time and resources to strengthen children’s abilities to develop to their full potential, enhance their talents and increase their skills in any recreational sport and more importantly life. The league's goal is to provide an opportunity for all children, in San Luis Obispo and the surrounding areas, to play organized basketball, learn life lessons, and create friendships. Our motto is "any child can play whether or not they can pay ''. We understand that not all families are able to afford league fees, the Make the Extra Pass Foundation will provide scholarships, athletic equipment, and snacks for children who cannot afford these costs. Specify the population, location of services provided, and any other identif iers your proposed project w ill support. The league will focus on enrolling all children (boys, girls and non-bianary) from age 8-14 who have an interest in basketball and team sports. MTEP foundation will focus their scholarships eligibility on children and families in underserved and at risk communities who can not afford to be part of a basketball program. We specifically target communities with lower income, children on the bubble academically and socially as well as those that are first generation including Bilingual / ESL homes. As a recreational basketball league everyone will play, not just the most skilled and experienced players. Children and families with means and a strong network can hire private coaches and trainers to work with their children to develop skills to ‘get ahead’ when they try out for school sports. Just like being able to afford paying for an SAT tutor for your child. The earlier children begin to train in athletics and are part of team sports, the sooner they build the tools to succeed socially and academically in school and in life. Playing on teams and in leagues with top professionals gives children the chance to be discovered by coaches and scouts. They need the funding to have access to that network. This happens if they can afford to be in a well connected league.
