Since Covid, we provide one week summer programming but have been asked to expand back to the full summer as we did pre-Covid and also provide year-round programming. To fulfill the needs of our community, we need more funding, recruitment of qualified staff, and outreach to underserved members of our community. Our K-12 content is built on the foundation of Peace Academy's 3 Pillars of Compassionate Leadership: Self-Awareness, Global Citizenship, Social Justice & Environmental Stewardship. Our curriculum is created based on Zaretta Hammond’s Dimensions of Equity to foster social harmony and critical consciousness within the dominant culture and to cultivate a sense of belonging, self-advocacy and independent learning for underserved learners. While building bridges of respect for each other and the environment, students experience the richness of peaceful coexistence among diverse people, including all faiths, cultures, and ethnic backgrounds. Our programs are designed for students to strengthen individuality, seek their potential, and maximize their opportunity to learn and contribute. Students are empowered to learn more about each other, embrace differences, and learn how to build on each other's strengths in a way that inspires creative innovation. We believe that when children learn our fundamental similarities, an appreciation for our differences emerges. We model for the world how our differences make us stronger, how to build on each other’s strengths, and how coexistence can be the pathway to peace. Peace Academy teachers honors each students identity by designing academic and non-academic experiences that ground them in a sense of belonging. Through these experiences, our children become resilient leaders who grasp the complexities of humanity and attain a better understanding of the world in which we live. Please be specif ic in the population and geographic area. PASA aims to serve diverse student populations in San Luis Obispo County with a focus on the most underrepresented BIPOC families of SLO City. Annually, an average of one third of our students attend on full or partial scholarship. The community has been very supportive with donations to help maintain our programming and scholarship fund. Through collaborative learning experiences and culturally responsive pedagogy, students discover their innate leadership qualities and develop an understanding of the human condition. PASA students are empowered to envision a community that recognizes and encourages diverse voices to create innovative solutions for a more equitable and just society. The curriculum highlights BIPOC leaders and heroes, from all walks of life, cultures, and faith backgrounds, locally and globally. Since the pandemic, we have shortened our summer program from four weeks to one week and supplemented with seasonal programming when resources are available. There is a need and demand for longer programming but PASA's current staff does not have sufficient resources to do so. Specify the population, location of services provided, and any other identif iers your proposed project w ill support. PASA naturally attracts families who are activists in our community. Our current funds provide us with limited opportunity for outreach. Nonetheless, our students collectively speak over nine languages every summer and include children of low-socio economic background and children of color. PASA is designed to provide a safe place for children of diverse voices to be affirmed, to converse, interact, and discuss social justice matters without judgment or fear. These students have an opportunity to see themselves as leaders for justice and change. PASA’s goal is to serve the diverse student populations of San Luis Obispo, with a focus on serving the needs of its most underserved/underrepresented BIPOC and groups who are historically marginalized while also providing mainstream groups an opportunity to discover DEI perspectives. Our academic programming focuses on mental health and socio-emotional well-being of some of our most vulnerable students to heal the equity gaps in education and leadership. PASA provides children of BIPOC, marginalized, low socio-economic, and underserved/underprivileged communities opportunities to feel a sense of belonging and for their voices to be heard in ways that otherwise are not in schools and dominant culture. These students are empowered to share, contribute, and be a part of an authentic learning experience that leads to a full participation in society. Each of our teachers is uniquely qualified with advanced degrees, training, and/or certifications in diversity and/or cultural sustainability. Financial equity gaps are dissolved via our scholarship fund. We also provide healthy snacks and meals throughout the day for children.
