The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. High School Scholarship Fund is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) tax-exempt organization dedicated to providing multiple scholarship awards to students graduating from SLO high schools: San Luis Obispo High School, Mission College Prep, and Pacific Beach High School. Scholarship recipients must demonstrate financial need, scholastic potential and a sincere desire for furthering their post -secondary education. Working with the high schools, the Board of Directors distributes scholarship applications in December of each year, and works with staff to ensure that all graduating seniors in the City of San Luis Obispo have access to this process. The Board screens and interviews all qualified applicants, of which the number of applicants far exceeds the number of scholarships the Board is able to support. The Board is committed to funding as many students as the money raised allows. Since 1968, over 590 students have been funded. The Board seeks donations and has an annual Chicken BBQ with all proceeds going to students' scholarships. Since we are an established group, we receive support from a number of community organizations, media sources and the schools' community. This scholarship application process is open to all graduating high school seniors attending three San Luis Obispo high schools: San Luis Obispo High School, Mission College Prep and Pacific Beach High School. PART 2: PROJECT INFORMATION Describe your proposed project or program. Specify what the requested funds will be used for, the need for this project, the number of people impacted. Include a project plan, if available. The Board is asking that the City of SLO match the funds raised by the Board. This match will double the number of students who will receive financial support as they "Follow Your Dream." Annually, though all the money raised goes directly to the students, the Board has not been able to support all the individuals who meet the criteria. Their applications focus on their true desire to follow Martin Luther King's example. It is most difficult for the Board is to read their life stories and how important Martin Luther King's message of hope gives them the courage to explain how they plan to "follow your dream." At the end of the school year, the Board hosts a breakfast for the students and their families along with their schools' staff at which time the students are honored with a scholarship for their remarkable achievement and perseverance. The Board also chooses to honor a Community Service organization, a Board member for extraordinary service and a President's Award typically honoring a school staff member. Describe the community the project will support. Specify the population, location of services provided, and any other identifiers your proposed project will support. The high schools' graduating seniors are awarded based on financial need, scholastic potential and desire to continue post -secondary education. Describe the equity gaps and community needs this project will address. Over 30% of the graduating seniors from the high schools are below the poverty line. The community has a responsibility to the city's graduating seniors to give them every opportunity to be successful as they pursue their dream.
