Spokes was founded in 1996 as the Nonprofit Support Center. Its goal was and continues to be to support
and strengthen nonprofit organizations throughout San Luis Obispo County by providing low cost, high
quality training, consulting and resource services. These services focus on these areas:
-Board Development, Education and Support
-Executive (Staff) Professional Development, Education and Support
-Technical assistance to start-up and smaller nonprofit organizations – less than $250,000 annual
operating budget, 1-3 staff/all-volunteer.
Spokes’ primary means of providing education is through a blend of workshops, facilitated roundtable
discussions, academies, training and symposiums, which are facilitated by experienced volunteers from the
nonprofit sector. In 2021 Spokes hosted 47 workshops and other events, attended by 433 people,
representing 95 different nonprofit organizations.
On October 15, 2020 and January 26, 2021 Spokes held roundtable discussions focused entirely on
advancing diversity, equity and inclusion within local nonprofits. These sessions were attended by 19
individuals from multiple nonprofit organizations in the San Luis Obispo County community.
In addition to training and consulting, Spokes provides a number of other resources to its members,
including consultation with nonprofit experts, a video collection of webinars and online classes, Foundation
Directory Online for grant research, networking opportunities, and access to an online board document
management system.
Please be specif ic in the population and geographic area.
Through the nature of our work, supporting local nonprofits, Spokes has tremendous community reach,
interfacing with a diverse array of nonprofit sectors and populations served. There are over 1,500
nonprofits in San Luis Obispo County, and over 80 of these are based in the City of San Luis Obispo.
Spokes currently has 56 organizational memberships. The membership consists of a variety of sectors,
including but not limited to the arts, environmental, human services, DEI, and animal services. Of our
member organizations 25 are located in the City of San Luis Obispo and the majority of the remaining
memberships are located in San Luis Obispo County.

Spokes proposes to hold an extended, online DEI Symposium from May to October 2023 with three goals:
1) To increase cultural literacy and self-awareness of local nonprofit leaders.
2) To provide practical resources to nonprofit profit leaders to use in building a work environment and
community programming that enhances diversity, equity and inclusion.
3) To provide a forum for nonprofit leaders to share their experiences in integrating this material into their
leadership, organizations and community.
The Symposium will include three 90-minute online sessions with a mix of expert speakers and panel
presentations. Spokes will draw panelists from community partners who have already begun this work,
looking first to past recipients of the City DEI grant.
In addition, Symposium attendees will have the opportunity to participate in roundtable discussions tied to
the topics of the keynotes and panel presentations. Spokes roundtables are facilitated discussions
focused on sharing and peer problem solving in a safe, respectful environment.
These presentations and roundtables will be spaced apart to allow time for participants to begin to apply
what they have learned in one session before being immersed in new content.
In preparation for this proposal Spokes has received consultation and support from Dr. Joy Pederson with
Clarity Collective, LLC. Dr. Pederson has professional expertise in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion
in the workplace and will be a welcome resource should she continue this work with us through planning
and implementation.
Spokes also plans to approach DEI focused organizations in the City, such as R.A.C.E. Matters SLO and
Diversity Coalition San Luis Obispo County, to potentially form collaborations in planning and presenting
the Symposium.
Spokes used this online symposium model successfully for its 2021 Symposium, “How to Survive and
Thrive in Times of Crisis.” The DEI Symposium will build on the success of that event, which also included
roundtable sessions led by knowledgeable facilitators, where symposium attendees could discuss their
successes and challenges in integrating the symposium content.
It should also be noted that in 2019/2020 Spokes facilitated a series of successful DEI focused roundtable
discussions. The funding provided through this grant will allow us to expand on this work, by bringing in
experts in the field to provide training on these sensitive and often misunderstood topics.
Tentative topics for the Symposium include the following:
- Foundations of diversity, equity and inclusion
- Building self-awareness and understanding privilege
- How to implement DEI strategies in your organization and work with the community.
- Understanding and addressing microaggressions in the workplace

This Symposium will be designed for organizations who are unaware, just gaining some awareness and/or
are stuck when it comes to implementing a culture that promotes diversity, equity and inclusion.
The Symposium will be specifically promoted to nonprofit organizations in the City of San Luis Obispo. The
Symposium will be open to all other interested participants, but to recognize the critical financial support of
the City, there will be a tier fee structure with a reduced, modest registration fee for City-based nonprofits
and residents. The training will take place virtually, as all of our training has since March 2020.
The estimated number of people served through this project as previously stated in this application is
based on past attendance in similar events hosted by Spokes. It is anticipated that leaders in attendance
will gain knowledge that will be shared with their staff, boards and subsequently make a positive impact on
the populations they serve. It is the goal of Spokes to have at least 40 organizations in attendance at the
Symposium and that 30 of these organizations will come from within the City of San Luis Obispo.
According to the 2020 Census Report, 84.2% of San Luis Obispo residents are white. At Spokes, our
experience has been that an even higher percentage of executive directors and board members of our
City nonprofits are white. It is critical that this group of community leaders develops awareness and
understanding of DEI to advance their own missions as well as the City’s DEI goals. Spokes is well
positioned to provide the necessary training and support to these leaders and their organizations.
Our nonprofit leadership has varying degrees of understanding of DEI and may or may not have
undertaken change efforts already. By training these nonprofit leaders to better understand the needs of
the community and how to implement effective changes, progress will be made toward meeting the City's
DEI goals. Our community nonprofits are a tremendous resource in closing these equity gaps and making
San Luis Obispo safe, inclusive and just.
Example : # of BIPOC serving on public boards, committees
Self-report data: These data will be gathered
through pre and post measures that will be
integrated into the symposium portion of the
program. They will likely consist of a series of
questions on a numeric scale.
Example: 10% increase by end of 2021
An indicator of success would be a significant
increase in the average score.
Example : # of BIPOC serving on public boards, committees
Qualitative data from roundtable discussions:
Notes will be taken during the roundtable
discussions, reflecting how organizations are
implementing the material and the successes and
struggles they may be facing.
Example: 10% increase by end of 2021
The first indicator of success is the number of
participants who followed up the symposium with
participation in the roundtable discussions. A
second indicator of success would be their efforts,
questions, successes and concerns documented
in the notes.
Example : # of BIPOC serving on public boards, committees
Qualitative data from follow-up with participants:
This will be accomplished through a phone call or
an open ended questionnaire sent to participants
a couple of months after the conclusion of the
program
Example: 10% increase by end of 2021
An indicator of success would be responses from
participants that describe ways that the program
influenced their leadership, organization and/or the
community they serve.

offer within its membership community when it comes to supporting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for local
nonprofits. Spokes will be better positioned to provide support to its members as they begin to implement
changes to enhance inclusivity, equity and safety within their organizations and service delivery models.
