THE XV WORLD FORESTRY CONGRESS
Building a Green, Healthy and Resilient Future with Forests
2–6 May 2022 | Coex, Seoul, Republic of Korea
The XV World Forestry Congress, hosted by the Republic of Korea, will bring together diverse stakeholders
worldwide to explore how the forest sector can best address global challenges and seize opportunities.
The Congress will:
Provide a forum for debating the state and future of world forestry at a unique moment in history.
Explore, raise awareness of and showcase the contributions of forests and the forest sector to
overcoming global problems related to climate, biodiversity, livelihoods, food security, peace and other
crucial issues.
Promote inclusive discussions with a view to placing forests at the centre of the global agenda on
sustainable development.
Identify innovative technical, scientific and policy measures in the forest sector for achieving net-zero
commitments.
Enable forest stakeholders to build and strengthen partnerships, launch new initiatives, and learn about
new technologies and trends.
Strategically position forests at the centre of a green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Congress will result in:
Strengthened commitment to halt deforestation, prevent forest degradation, expand the forest area and
increase investment in forests, forestry and sustainable forest industries.
The dissemination of new forest data and knowledge and cutting-edge technologies for sustainable
forest management and use.
Heightened awareness among policymakers and the public of the crucial role that forests and trees
must play in a green, healthy and resilient future and in building back better from the pandemic.
Seoul – a dynamic cultural centre
Forests hold an important place in Korean culture and history,
and forest restoration, environmental sustainability and economic
growth have gone hand-in-hand as the country has developed. The
Korean people see forests as an invaluable asset to be passed on to
future generations, and the government ensures they are managed
sustainably to provide multiple benefits.
Seoul is a dynamic cultural centre where technology and modern life
mix beautifully with traditional values; it is also a hub for global trends
in entertainment, music, fashion, culinary culture, and more. Seoul is
home to well-preserved ancient palaces and five World Heritage sites.
It has hosted many international conferences and is well-prepared
to safely welcome visitors at the COEX Convention Center and its
state-of-the-art facilities. The Republic of Korea looks forward to
welcoming the world’s forest community, sharing lessons learned,
and showcasing the country’s majestic forests!
The Congress organizers will follow all health protocols to ensure the safety of participants.
3Buildingagreen, healthy and resilient future with forests
Who should attend the CONGRESS?
Participants in the XV World Forestry Congress will represent the full range of forest stakeholders. They will include
forest policymakers, managers, administrators and academics as well as representatives of indigenous peoples,
local communities, the private sector, civil society and the public, and they will also come from other sectors, such
as agriculture, water and energy. Because of this diversity, the Congress will be an inclusive forum for sharing
knowledge, views and findings and establishing and consolidating partnerships and networks, both within the
sector and beyond. This inclusivity, in turn, will give the Congress a powerful voice in determining how best to build
a green, healthy and resilient future with forests. All participants will attend in their personal capacities.
What to expect
The Congress will comprise hundreds of interactive events – in-depth plenary and sub-theme sessions on
overarching forest topics; special events on key and emerging issues; a high-level dialogue and ministerial
forum on forest financing; paper and poster sessions to enable participants from around the world to present
their work; side events and partner meetings; networking opportunities; pre-Congress events; tours and social
activities; and a large exhibition space to enable forest-related organizations, institutions and other entities
to showcase their skills and expertise.

4 XV World Forestry Congress
Thematic Focus
Building a Green, Healthy and Resilient Future with Forests
The Congress’s theme, building a green, healthy and resilient future with forests, reflects the integral role that
forests play in ensuring the health, well-being and stability of the planet and its inhabitants. The theme will frame
discussions in the global forestry community on the state and future of world forestry and put forests at the
centre of efforts to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Congress will have six sub-themes.
Nature-based solutions for climate-change adaptation and mitigation and
biodiversity conservation
This sub-theme will discuss the potential of forests to provide nature-based solutions that deliver climate-
change adaptation and mitigation while supporting biodiversity and securing ecosystem services.
Turning the tide: reversing deforestation and forest degradation
This sub-theme will discuss progress in and priorities for addressing deforestation and forest degradation.
The implementation of recent global commitments and the operationalization of major global initiatives will
form part of the discourse.
5Buildingagreen, healthy and resilient future with forests
The green pathway to growth and sustainability
This sub-theme will assess options for viable “green” forest-based pathways that contribute to sustainable
consumption and production and the achievement of global commitments such as the Sustainable
Development Goals and the Global Forest Goals.
Forests and human health: revisiting the connections
This sub-theme will build understanding of and revitalize connections between forests and human health
and well-being, using both scientific and traditional knowledge. It will give voice to diverse stakeholders –
urban and rural – and explore challenges and innovative solutions.
Managing and communicating forest information and knowledge
This sub-theme will present innovations in forest monitoring and examine how best to improve collaboration
between science and policy and communicate forest issues to diverse audiences.
Forests without boundaries: enhancing management and cooperation
This sub-theme will draw attention to forests in the context of landscape dynamics and the multisectoral
coordination and partnerships needed to achieve sustainable forest management.
