This Native American Heritage Month, the City of San Luis Obispo honors and celebrates the perseverance, rich diversity, and excellence of Native and Indigenous people within our community and across the nation; and WHEREAS, To honor and celebrate, we first must recognize that Native and Indigenous peoples were the original inhabitants of the lands that now constitute the United States and that this country was founded on a painful history in which Native and Indigenous people were colonized and oppressed by Federal policies of assimilation and discrimination; and WHEREAS, Though the past cannot, and should not, be ignored, the City of San Luis Obispo recommits to eliminating systemic racism and discrimination against all Indigenous Peoples and to promote practices and policies that honor the City’s Indigenous roots, history, and contributions past and present; and WHEREAS City Hall resides on the ancestral homelands of the yak tit ʸu titʸu yak tiłhini Northern Chumash Tribe, and the City of San Luis Obispo recognizes the incredible diversity across the Indigenous communities for whom San Luis Obispo County is home; and NOW, THEREFORE, I Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo, on behalf of the entire City Council, hereby proclaim the recognition of November as Native American Heritage Month and urge all community members this month, and every month, to join me in honoring our Native and Indigenous community and their beautiful and paramount contributions to our City and throughout the Central Coast.
