Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. I am writing to support the project proposed by HASLO on behalf of families in our city who are desperately in need of affordable housing. I live a little over a block away, at 1061 Grove Street. I realize there are community concerns and I acknowledge that they have some validity. However, on balance, I believe that the overall benefit to our community, as beset as it is with the growing problem of homelessness, requires concessions to be made. As for height issues and the neighborhood disparity of a five story development, as distasteful as that may be from an aesthetic point of view, I commend to you the following from the Environmental Protective Agency of the federal government: "Building denser housing will help minimize sprawl, protecting and preserving the natural environment. Think: Building up, not out. Plus, less sprawl also leads to shorter commutes and decreased carbon emissions. Denser developments consume less land to accommodate the same number of houses. Consuming less land creates less impervious cover in the watershed. Increasing development densities is one strategy communities can use to minimize regional water quality impacts." -July 7, 2021 (www.epa.gov - smartgrowth) As for trees, no one wants to see established trees removed. I urge the planners and developer to make every effort to circumvent tree removal, and, where necessary, to mitigate such with plantings elsewhere within the city of suitably sized trees. I urge the commission to approve this project, with appropriate mitigations, so that many more families might benefit...which, inherently, greatly benefits our community at large.
