Indigenous Peoples Day Proclamation Whereas, the City of San Luis Obispo recognizes that the indigenous peoples of the lands that would later become known as the Americas have occupied these lands since time immemorial; and, Whereas, San Luis Obispo is built on the Tilhini homeland and villages of the indigenous peoples of this region; and, Whereas, Indigenous Peoples Day was first proposed in 1977 by a delegation of Native Nations to the United Nations sponsored International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas to replace Columbus Day; and, Whereas, we acknowledge the indigenous roots we have in San Luis Obispo and in California, and the cultural and familial ties that connect us; and, Whereas, Indigenous Peoples Day shall reflect the ongoing struggles of indigenous people of this land and shall celebrate the thriving culture and value that indigenous people add to our City; and, Whereas, the City encourages equality for all Indigenous Peoples and honors our nation’s indigenous heritage, history and contributions; and, Whereas, the City of San Luis Obispo offers gratitude to Native People on behalf of the people of San Luis Obispo, in recognition of the Indigenous care for this land, and in honor of indigenous culture and philosophy. Now, therefore, I, Erica A, Stewart Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo, on behalf of the entire City Council, proclaim the second Monday of October this year, as “Indigenous Peoples Day,” and we strongly encourage San Luis Obispo Public Schools to include the teaching of indigenous peoples’ history and also encourage local businesses, organizations and public institutions to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day.
