Subject: Monitoring and priorities
From: Dale Sutliff, SLO resident
Regarding your meeting today, I have reviewed your agenda items. I’m not able to attend. Please consider, and
address, my following comments.
All that you plan, rank, and have done, is very good and acceptable. I have one recommendation I ask that you to
consider in finalizing your Active Transportation Plan (ATP). I have bicycled San Luis Obispo for over forty years for both
work and recreation. I have advocated for improvements in the past both unofficially and officially, as citizen user and
SLOBC Board member, and SLO County Advisory Committee member.
Recommendation:
Connectivity! Closing gaps!
This is essential to encourage higher bike use and improve the safety of users.
Continuity of “through the city movement" is vital to obtaining increased bike users. Over the years I have heard users
concerns, which are often about the problem of no safe continuance of routes. This has affected whether they will ride
a bike from place to place. I have always shared that opinion.
Safely eliminating route gaps is the most important item to be accomplished.
The ATP/City projects and program actions to date have been well done. But gap connections for continuous routes
remains a challenging and essential action for San Luis Obispo’s most positive task to do. The city needs to highly
prioritize and work to get gaps closed. This will strongly meet the ATC objectives for increasing the numbers of
interested users.
Dale
