HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 5a - Staff Presentation TC12052022Tree Committee 12/5/2022 Item 5a Staff  Presentation 1 Urban Forestry Program •2 of 3 FTE Staff retired in December 2021 •City Arborist/UF Supervisor •Urban Forester •Vacant Positions Filled in interim and contract status Increased Contract Pruning West Coast Arborist selected for new Contract Since start of contract, Pavement Zones 6,7,9 and a majority of 5 has been completed pruned. WCA currently used for Service Request and Emergencies. City intends to continue the use of contract services for zone pruning into future, which aligns with UF Organizational Assessment. 1 2 Tree Committee 12/5/2022 Item 5a Staff  Presentation 2 TREE IN V E N T O R Y UPDATE •Updates the former 2008 audit with an accurate inventory of trees located in the Public ROW, City Facilities, and Parks •Allows for easier scheduling for pruning work orders with WCA •Work supports the MCG of Climate Resiliency and assist with the 10,000 Tree Initiative 3 Urban Forestry Organizational Assessment •Assessed the Urban Forest Program •Additional contract funding for area pruning •Ambitious Tree Planting Initiatives •Collaborative Department Approach in updated program structure •Engage passionate and supportive community members •Increase level of performance in meeting Sustainability Indicators 3 4 Tree Committee 12/5/2022 Item 5a Staff  Presentation 3 10 TALL INITIATIVE Pillar 6, Natural Solutions of the City’s CAP, has the work plan to plant 10,000 new trees by 2035. Trees will be planted by residents, community members, and the City. Trees are expected to be planted in Parks, vacant tree sites, private property, and primarily open space riparian zones. Open Space and private property plantings will result in the lowest cost maintenance. The Ideal Urban Forest •Streets are fully planted with the appropriate species at the appropriate spacing •Age and species diversification •Tree maintenance is performed at appropriate intervals •Infrastructure is appropriate to support the adjacent trees •Parks are lined with trees in the correct locations that allow for both shade, relaxation, and outdoor recreation •Open Space is planted and maintained with numerous trees •The tree canopy is increased and meets community expectations •When trees fail, they are immediately replaced with he correct tree •Development occurs with trees considered and impacts mitigated 5 6 Tree Committee 12/5/2022 Item 5a Staff  Presentation 4 Questions for the Tree Committee Does the tree committee support that diversified approach to the new tree plantings?
