HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 5a. Vice Mayor Carlyn Christianson Appreciation Proclamationwhereas, Carlyn joined the San Luis Obispo Community in 1989. A strong supporter of women’s
reproduction rights of choice and access, she worked for Planned Parenthood as Center Director
from 1989 through 1995 and was key in facilitating the relocation of the Planned Parenthood clinic
after the arson fire in February, 1995; and,
whereas, Carlyn served on the SLO Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors, as a Steering
Committee Member for ACTION for Healthy Communities; Chair of the Chamber’s Housing Task Force;
Board Member for the Environmental Defense Center; Chair of the SLO County Health Commission;
Board Member for the SLO Community Health Foundation and Leadership SLO; and,
WHEREAS, Carlyn served on the City’s Planning Commission for six years and serving on the
County’s Planning Commission for four years. She served on the Land Use and Circulation Task Force
to update the City’s General Plan and blueprint for future development; and,
WHEREAS, Carlyn chose to continue her public service and was elected to the City Council in a
June 2013 special election to fill out a term, for a full term in 2014, and her current term in 2018. Truly
reflecting her commitment to both public service and her community; and,
WHEREAS, Carlyn has demonstrated a love and care for all of her fellow persons with exceptional
commitment to inclusiveness and diversity, making all people feel welcomed and cared for and her
personal drive toward justice and fairness have made the San Luis Obispo City and community a brighter
and richer place to live; and,
WHEREAS, Carlyn has mentored dozens of advisory body members and several council members,
providing gentle coaching, direct advice, occasional stern looks and lots of warm encouragement; and,
WHEREAS, Carlyn’s direct “tell it like it is” style of communication and clear-eyed deliberation at the
dais reflects her profound commitment to effective and efficient governance, respect for the public
process, a passion for community service and a huge heart; and,
WHEREAS, During Carlyn’s term in office she has led the City in the passage of Measure G-20, COVID-19
response, developing a plan for carbon neutrality, creation of the CAT and MCU teams to address
homelessness, and development of housing projects across the community; and,
WHEREAS, Carlyn’s lasting legacies will benefit generations and she most certainly left San Luis
Obispo better than when she arrived and will be sorely missed both personally and professionally; and,
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed on behalf of all our citizens and employees, we hereby express our
sincere appreciation and gratitude to Carlyn Christianson for her dedicated service to the community
and extend best wishes for her happiness in all future endeavors.
