Kathy Kimball San Luis Obispo 805.440.4360 To: San Luis Obispo Parks Commission From: Tom Ziegler RE: Dog Park Plans Date: Dec. 29, 2022 I will try to keep this brief using bullet points. I do not live in SLO but visit for extended periods of time often during the year. My two pups and I use the park in the afternoons every day we are in town. 1. Neither option given reflect any of the survey responses you solicited. 2. The park should include a smaller small dog park, and one larger mixed use park. 3. Your plans do not show water available in each of the parks. Water needs to be relatively close to where humans congregate. 4. There needs to be large open areas where chuckits can be used for long throws without the chance of hitting humans with the balls. Your plans are far too broken up for that. 5. Humans like to congregate and talk as the dogs play. We know each other and it is as much social time for us as it is the dogs. 6. Your benches are too far apart for human interaction. 7. There are too many entrances to the park. Dogs will go to where the new dogs are coming in. There is too much chance of dogs getting out a gate that is not near where their human is, even if it is double gated. 8. We use the restrooms as a wind screen on cold and windy days. The restroom wall is outside the park in these options. We also seek shade and wind protection on hot days. 9. Parking is an issue. There are not enough parking places now but there is room to add parking next to the current spots or turn the lot into two sided parking. That leaves plenty of room for two dog areas in the park. We don’t need a three section park. 10. Plan B has the large dog park in a U shape. We need visual contact of our dogs while they play. 11. Currently the lightweight chairs (provided by dog park patrons) are perfect as they can be moved to the shade or sun or out of the wind depending on the season. 12. Trash receptacles need to be place near entrances where they will be used, especially near entrances/exits. 13. These plans look like they were drawn by someone who does not live in SLO and has never visited and observed the park when it is being utilized (morning and late afternoon). 1 Please ditch these elaborate plans and go back to a simple, fenced park that has the few amenities mentioned by the majority in your survey. Fencing is important and grass would be nice!! Tom Ziegler Flagstaff, AZ ( 2
