Robert Vesselx; P.E. Madam Mayor and Council Members,
Vice President
Norma Frey Thank you for taking the time to consider the future of the La Loma Adobe. Friends of La Loma
serretag Adobe (FLLA) has been working in coordination with City staff in the hope of preserving the La
Pierre Radeinaker Loma Adobe as an historical asset for the community and an appropriate feature at the
Treasurer trailhead of the Bowden Ranch and Reservoir Canyon Open Space. We are confident that we
Jan Trench can bring this important cultural resource to the next level of preservation within the next City
Robert Hoover,Ph.D. budget cycle.
Joan Sullivan
(Emeritus) FLLA and City staff have accomplished several very important steps. We commissioned an
Nancy Hillenburg Historic Resource Evaluation which documented the status of this adobe as eligible for the
(Emeritus) California Register of Historic Resources. Also, an Historic Structures Report is currently
underway which will define the critical historic features of the building that need to be
considered when planning for the future of the resource.
We have hardly been alone in this process. We have enjoyed enthusiastic support, material
and financial from neighbors, the City, as well as a pair of grants from the California Missions
Foundation.
The adobe is failing. It has become clear that we need to structurally stabilize the building and
tighten up its outside shell, particularly the roof, before any rehabilitation work is attempted.
FLLA has conducted emergency repairs and temporary fixes on its own, but the next steps are
beyond FLLA's current capacity. Thus, we seek an allocation of City funds to conduct the
needed stabilization and roof repair. We expect to oversee the design and construction work
so as to relieve the Public Works Department of the task as much as possible.
Fortunately, there are tried-and-true structural improvement techniques that have been used
on adobe buildings throughout the southwestern US as well as locally, for example, at the
Dana Adobe in Nipomo, the Rodriguez Adobes here in San Luis Obispo and even at our own
Mission Church. At the end of this process, we anticipate a stable and secure outside shell
ready for whatever new use is deemed appropriate.
Attached is an outline of the work we propose to accomplish over the next two years with
financial support from the City. We appreciate your consideration.
Sincerely,
0
