January 25, 2023
Mayor Stewart and Council Members,
Thank you for the opportunity to provide input for the upcoming Citizens’ Revenue Enhancement Oversight
th
Commission meeting on January 26. As a 42-year resident of SLO, it is my hope that promotion of arts and
culture will continue to be a primary driver of our city’s goals for economic recovery.
Advancement of arts and culture, while a citywide concern, is of particular importance to our downtown. In
past weeks we’ve been barraged with media coverage of declining downtowns throughout the U.S. including
San Francisco, New York, and Washington D.C. While San Luis Obispo isn’t a major metropolitan hub, its
experience is comparable to these cities, suffering the long-term economic threats attributable to Covid and a
declining U.S. economy.
Thriving downtowns across the country have a common denominator - all have thriving arts districts. A
dynamic arts presence in our downtown differentiates it, assures a viable and enjoyable destination for our
residents and tourists. Your sustained support for the development of a cultural arts district should be a
primary goal for our city.
I encourage you to keep your eye on the prize – our downtown.
Sincerely,
David Cox
