Dear Honorable Mayor Stewart and council members, Francis, Marx, Pease and Shoresman,
Sadly, I did not complete the November survey regarding priorities for the coming budget years in San Luis Obispo. I am
unable to attend the upcoming meeting, but wanted to send you my thoughts on the subject. I realize that the areas to
be discussed all have an impact on the welfare of San Luis Obispo. However, in looking at the 9 areas to be investigated,
please know that in my mind number 5, Economic and Downtown Vitality is an essential lynchpin to a balanced
community. The Cultural Corridor, arts and culture is a cornerstone to continued vitality downtown and overall mental
health of the community. In addition, the mission, the history museum, the art museum and the new SLO REP theatre,
with its two theatres, have the opportunity to bring revenue to the downtown, not just from our county, but from
around the state and country, ensuring heightened revenue from shopping, restaurants and hotels.
Last year, the city council’s $3.94 challenge grant to SLO REP for its new theatre showed support for
the idea that arts and culture will help the city’s goal of Economic Recovery, Resiliency & Fiscal
Sustainability. Realizing that there are other pressing difficulties that face the city going forward, I urge you to continue
to support the Cultural Corridor and to see it to its completion.
Thank you for your consideration and support.
Sincerely,
Catherine Luckett
