The La Loma Adobe is an historic treasure, an integral part of the cultural history of San Luis Obispo. We are fortunate that it is still mostly intact, and, while needing some restoration, there is a friends group who is willing and able to help. Please consider the La Loma Adobe when planning for the future….the city is modernizing so rapidly and the many newly-built structures are adversely impacting the historical significance of our town, which is one of the qualities that people (both residents and visitors) love about San Luis Obispo. Our town is already in danger of losing the Heyd Adobe to the building of the new SLO Repertory Theatre and parking structure; this historic home is another unique adobe structure in our county and is significant in that it is one of the first buildings constructed in 1939 with the new technology at that time of bitumen/adobe bricks. It will be a significant and tragic loss to the city if this building is not preserved, especially in the historically significant neighborhood context in which it is located. La Loma de La Nopalera Adobe, in the neighborhood near Reservoir Canyon, is one of oldest surviving adobes in our county and one of a handful of two story adobes in the state of California. It chronicles the stories of several families who lived there, beginning in the 1840s, perhaps even earlier, continuing until the 1950s. This adobe has literally seen and weathered the many changes that the town of San Luis Obispo has undergone since that time. I know there are so many important things to consider while planning for the future of San Luis Obispo, but I believe that setting aside funding for the restoration and interpretation the unique La Loma de La Nopalera Adobe deserves your attention. Sincerely, Antoinette Padgett 1
