Subject:Urge Consideration of Support for La Loma Adobe for ‘23-‘25 Budget Cycle

Dear City Council Members,
In every budget cycle there should be a balance in spending on programs benefiting citizens between
meeting today’s critical needs and meeting less tangible needs that are nevertheless important in
attending to and advancing the culture, the soul, of our community. I am writing today in support of a
program benefiting the latter, the Friends of La Loma Adobe (FFLA).
The La Loma Adobe is an unrecognized treasure in our county, so unrecognized that I never heard
about it in the first thirty one years I lived here. It is one of only two adobes remaining in our county
and approximately thirty statewide. Sitting on traditional Chumash tribal land, the adobe has also
been part of mission lands, a store, a home, and a place where leaders key in San Luis Obispo
history gathered. In the assessment process of being submitted for placement on the California
Register of Historical Resources the La Loma Adobe, once in danger of collapse, needs funding tor
the FLLA to continue the work begun by the City of San Luis Obispo in stabilizing the structure and
continue restoration.
Restoration of the La Loma Adobe falls into two of the goals proposed for upcoming budget cycle:
1) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in FLLA’s programs to preserve and raise awareness of the
multicultural nature of the adobe’s beginnings (Spanish, Mexican, and French directly and within an
even larger context throughout the county) and so promote respect for the contributions by diverse
populations still residing here today. Plans include a non-invasive assessment of archeological
resources on the site; and
2) Climate Change through its programs to:
a) clean up damaged and invasive plants and restore more sustainable, historic vegetation on the
Adobe grounds; and
b) develop demonstration gardens containing native vegetation at Reservoir Canyon Trailhead
facilities.
In summary, I urge the City Council members to allocate funds within the 2033-2025 budget cycle to
the FLLA to forward much needed restoration of the La Loma Adobe, our local historic and cultural
gem. History is long in the making but can soon be forgotten without the preservation of the resources
that chronicle it.
