Re: Inclusion of Arts and Culture in Major City goals
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I am writing to you, on behalf of the Board of Directors of the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival,
to express our unanimous support for the inclusion of "arts and culture" in the Major City Goals or as a
critical element of a Major City Goal, such as Economic Development, for the next two years.
A thriving arts scene not only enriches the lives of residents, but it also has a significant economic impact
on the community. According to Americans for the Arts, nonprofit arts and culture organizations alone
generate $166.3 billion in economic activity annually. This means that investing in the arts can lead to job
creation, increased small business growth, and more revenue for the city.
In addition to the economic benefits, the arts also have a positive impact on the social and emotional well-
being of residents. Studies have shown that exposure to the arts can improve cognitive development, reduce
stress and anxiety, and promote empathy and understanding. This is especially important in a time when
many people are feeling isolated and disconnected.
A thriving arts scene also helps attract and retain a diverse and talented workforce. Young professionals
and families are increasingly drawn to cities with vibrant arts and culture offerings, and they play a key role
in driving innovation and economic growth.
Furthermore, arts and culture can be a powerful tool for community engagement and social justice. They
can be used to tell the stories of underrepresented groups, promote understanding, and spark dialogue about
important issues.
In conclusion, arts and culture play a vital role in the growth and development of our city and City Council
support is critically important. The entire Board of Directors of the SLO Film Fest hopes you will consider
the importance of including "arts and culture" in the Major City Goals for the next two years.
