Hi,
My name is Greg Robinson and my kids play roller hockey at Santa Rosa Park. My oldest kid is now 13 years old and he
started roller hockey when he was 5.
I would like to prioritize additional funding for ongoing maintenance and some additional safety measures at the roller
hockey facility.
Safety first; The current roller hockey court does not have adequate protective measures at the goal ends to prevent
pucks flying over and hitting other park users. Over the years we’ve had a few people get hit and lots of near-misses.
See photos below that show possible solutions.
Rink maintenance has been the responsibility of hockey players and parents over the years. This has included remedying
dangerous situations like protruding screws, protruding chain link fence, broken doors, broken/missing/unsecured rink
boards, and fixing vandalism. THIS MORNING, one of the dads was duct taping the door shut on the notice board. The
sharp metal door has been flapping open AT FACE LEVEL now for a couple of weeks.
In addition to the maintenance issues that are also SAFETY ISSUES, there does not seem to be any ongoing effort to keep
the rink free of trash & debris. In fact, the park maintenance crew blows debris INTO the rink, under the boards. Hockey
players bring our own blowers to make the surface safe for skating. The bench/box areas are always full of trash and
leaves…unless we do that work. There are also two large, deciduous trees the hang over the court that provide year-
round court upkeep…for hockey players/parents.
We pay taxes. We pay fees to use the courts. We pay fees to have the lights on. Why on earth are we also forced to pay
for and perform repairs, provide site security, and provide site clean up?
Respectfully,
Greg Robinson
