Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. There was an error in my e-mail regarding the insurrection that occurred at the US Capital Building. It happened in 2021, not 2020. ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: John Sutter < To: emailcouncil@slocity.org <emailcouncil@slocity.org> Sent: Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at 07:42:38 AM PST Subject: City Budget for 2023 - 2025 I saw an article in the New Times newspaper last week that was about the input given by special interest groups that the city received at a very recent meeting regarding subject budget. I don't recall exactly what the article said, but the proposed budget for a new police station was criticized by some of these special interest groups who were mostly art and theater groups. I strongly support the city going forward with a new police station. Public safety should be of paramount importance to the city, not the arts. Certainly some money needs to go to them, but public safety affects everyone! Public safety is more important then ever because of what has happened recently in this country. I am speaking specifically of the 2020 insurrection at the Capital Building, which clearly demonstrated what can happen when there is no police force or an inadequate police force to respond to a mob of anarchists bent on destroying property and people. Hopefully that will never happen again, but you never know. Another specific incident happened in our own back yard, i.e. the Black Lives Matter riot. People's property (cars parked on the street) were damaged and the 101 freeway was blocked by these rioters. In closing, let me say that art programs in a city are important, but if you won't attend these programs because you are afraid for your own personal safety, then what good are they? 1
