Parking Districts are created when neighbor residents identify problem(s) and then work with City Staff to determine ways to address these issues. If the residents of the street approve the idea of a parking district, the request then goes to the City Council for approval. Creating a parking district is a time and labor intensive project on the part of residents and neighbors, and city staff. That the final vote for approval is made by the City Council shows the seriousness with which these districts are created. We ask that, depending on the end result tonight, as various parking districts are reviewed and perhaps adjusted or modified, the original reasons for the approval of the district are kept in mind and the neighborhoods are still protected despite any modifications. Downtown and Cal Poly have grown around many residential neighborhoods and changed the quality of life for residents in those areas in ways that many other city residents don’t experience. San Luis Obispo wants people to live downtown, but a strong and successful downtown needs to be liveable for neighborhood residents, as well as being supportive to businesses and attractive to visitors. Please consider including parking district neighborhood residents in future discussions and planning for any proposed adjustments to parking districts. City council members and city staff may change but residents will have the memory of why the district was created and actually live with the issues of a busy street on a daily, and nightly, basis. Their input should be asked for and valued. Thank you. Ursula Bishop Dana Street Parking District 1
