Gentlefolk,
The proposed policy to legalize bikes on sidewalks is short-sighted and imprudent. It will lead to physical injuries of both
pedestrians and of bike riders, and trigger more conflict between these two classes of citizens and residents engaged in
their respective active movement through town. It will also increase risk for bike riders crossing streets, given the speed
of the bikes and the way in which vehicle drivers will not be expecting the bikes suddenly crossing at corners as the
vehicles turn through intersections. The same concept will apply to driveways. Moreover, with the development of
heavier, faster, e-bikes, these conflicts between bikes, pedestrians and vehicles crossing driveways are magnified on
sidewalks.
There is wisdom in respecting the conventions that have developed to maintain safe travel statewide between walkers,
bike riders, and vehicles.
Be wise in this regard. Please vote no on the proposal to amend the City ordinance forbidding bikes on sidewalks.
