Re.: Froom Ranch Specific Plan, Item 9
Dear City Counci) Members:
I'm writing in support of the Villaggio housing development for seniors. In my
thirteen years as Director of Hospice of San Luis Obispo County I was frontline to
the various needs of our elder residents. (I have since joined that very illustrious
population myself.)
Hospice served numerous older individuals dealing with grief or chronic, life
threatening illness. Common needs were for a secure life plan where they could
remain as independent as possible and reside in the same community until the
end of their lives. Family and friends can't always be there for needed emotional
and physical support yet intensely want to be at peace that their loved one is
supported. Hospice, home health or independent caregivers can attend to
residents if needed.
We all benefit from intellectual and social stimulation as well as an independent
lifestyle in a setting where we can easily attend cultural and recreational events.
Loneliness is also a common challenge and through the various clubs, activities or
simply drop-in cafes or restaurants, the Villaggio community provides the
opportunity to meet others in a low-stress environment. Having transportation
services to doctor's appointments, shopping, or to enjoy and participate in the
larger San Luis Obispo community is a major plus.
Providing this needed resource is another way our innovative city/county shines.
Sincerely,
Donna Kean, Director Hospice of San Luis Obispo County (ret.)
