Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Dear Mayor and City Council members, I am writing to oppose the Anholm bikeway project. What has come to my attention is that this project is over budget and that a consent item was placed on the Council agenda that would transfer funds from other budget areas to fund this project. Of particular concern are the areas noted below. It is hard to imagine the City does not have projects that could be performed with the funds outlined below that would benefit the general residential population! Sidewalks ($100,000) - Our sidewalks downtown need repair. Some work has been done but there are still many sidewalks where tree roots have made the sidewalk a hazard to walk, especially for our aging population, or those with small children and strollers. Pedestrian Crossing Improvements ($100,000) - Again, shouldn't we address pedestrian safety needs as well? Streetlights ($141,101) - Safety is a concern in all areas of the city and if there is money in the budget, investments should continue in lighting improvements. The City has spent thousands of dollars on bike lanes, bikeways, and other bicycle associated improvements. Could the Council direct me to bike lane use counts before and after the "improvements." Many of us rarely see a bicyclist using the vast number of green lanes installed in the City. I imagine students near Cal Poly use their bicycles to get to campus but elsewhere I have not seen any evidence to support additional projects of this type. How is the City measuring the "success" of these changes before continuing to implement them across the entire City and invest millions of dollars? In closing I ask that you reexamine the project as a whole and weigh any benefits against the spiraling cost of this project. I am opposed to the project and to using funds from other needed project areas to fund the budget shortfall of the Anhom bikeway project. Thank you. Karen Webb 27 year city resident 1
