Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Dear City Council Members, I do not see how we can justify spending over $6 million for dedicated bicycle lanes on 25 mph residential streets. If this were Broad Street, or Santa Rosa Street, then the safety issue is much more obvious and the need more pressing. If we are going to spend $6 million on bike lanes, then it should be a dedicated trail not already served by existing roadways. I would like to ask the council if dedicated bike lanes are needed on Chorro Street, why couldn't that be accomplished with some paint and signs? Again, we are talking about 25 mph residential streets. It appears the bike lanes would be more of a disruption to the neighborhood than an improvement. That amount of money should improve things for everyone, not just those who are able to ride a bicycle. I think at times there are people making traffic engineering decisions that do not take into account the fact that not everyone is physically able to ride a bicycle and not every day is conducive to riding a bicycle. Another concern is that Chorro and Broad Streets are the only alternative north/south route through that part of the city. If there Santa Rosa Street had to be closed down for some reason - a major accident, bridge damage by Santa Rosa Park, damaged roadway, tree down, fire, etc., then the only other options are California Boulevard and Chorro Street. Such permanent improvements to Chorro Street and Broad Street would channel traffic through that narrow corridor. As the roads are now, if needed, parking could be restricted on Chorro and Broad Streets and there would be the extra width to use in case of some emergency. Emergency vehicles will need another way to get to/from that section of town. My biggest concern is the cost. We need to make sure that our water sources are secure and reliable. I would rather see that money spent on infrastructure improvements to help secure our water supply. Thank you, Larry Edwards resident, Fredericks St, SLO 1
