The previous survey stated that the Mayor’s monthly salary is $1,912 and Council’s monthly salary is $1,551. The correct amount for the City of Santa Barbara’s Mayor is $4,142 and Council is $3,313. In addition, Santa Barbara has a unique Charter provision which ties the Mayor and Council compensation to $100 and 80%, respectively, of the Area Median Income (AMI) for a one -person household which automatically adjust annually on April 1. This provision was adopted by voters in November 2004. We have contacted all of the comparison cities and confirmed that no other cities utilize AMI to calculate Mayor or Council salaries. We also issued a City Clerk listserv inquiry as to whether any cities, other than Santa Barbara, use AMI and no affirmative response was received. The median household income in the City of San Luis Obispo is $53,900. In response to another Council inquiry, staff prepared the attached spreadsheet which lists the number of and duration of Council meetings held in Fiscal Year 2012-13 and 2013-14. Meeting times were rounded to the nearest quarter hour.
