Pride Month Proclamation WHEREAS, the City of San Luis Obispo supports the rights of all citizens to experience equality and freedom from discrimination; and WHEREAS, the City honors the history of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Queer (LGBTQ+) liberation movement and recognizes that LGBTQ+ individuals have had an immeasurable impact on the cultural, civic, and economic successes of our city and nation; and WHEREAS, this nation was founded on the principle that every individual has infinite dignity and worth, and the San Luis Obispo City Council calls upon community members to embrace this principle and work to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists; and WHEREAS, Pride Month began as a protest against profiling and violence against LGBTQ+ people, who continue to face intense struggles to this day; and WHEREAS, human beings deserve not merely the tools for survival but also the opportunity to pursue joy; and WHEREAS, LGBTQ+ people have historically struggled to find others like themselves in media and their community, and Pride Month serves as a crucial time of visibility and community; and WHEREAS, recognition from one’s government is crucial for feeling safe in one’s community and the City of San Luis Obispo is intent on ensuring that everyone in San Luis Obispo feels welcome, safe, and a sense of belonging; and WHEREAS, recognizing and celebrating Pride Month influences awareness and provides opportunities to engage in dialogue to strengthen alliances, build acceptance and advance equal rights for all; and WHEREAS, Pride Month is a cornerstone of American culture that allows us to lift up our successes while working toward a better, more inclusive, and equitable future. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo on behalf of the entire City Council hereby proclaim the month of June 2023 as Pride Month in San Luis Obispo in support of the LGBTQ+ community.
