Dear Parks and Recreation Commissioners,
We would first like to thank staff for making efforts to improve upon the proposed dog park design! Should there be any
further significant design changes, we would support any further increase in its size. We have the following comments:
1) The large dog to small dog area ra?o appears to be about 55%/45%. Large dogs, which include most of the very
ac?ve working dogs, need large areas to run. We would encourage an internal fence redesign with a 70/30 ra?o.
As an example, El Chorro Dog Park has a ¼ acre area for the small dogs and over an acre for the large dogs,
which is closer to an 80/20 ra?o.
2) We were glad to see the service gate added to the small dog park area but did not see one for the large dog
park. We are assuming this was an oversight as one will need to be installed for occasional vehicle access needs
for the large dog area.
3) On the landscaping around the community garden, we would suggest that no trees be installed that will shade
the growing boxes during the winter months. This is important to maximize the success of each garden plot. The
current design appears to show trees along the southern and por?ons of the western and eastern perimeters
that would conflict with this concept. Large shrubs should be used instead. If the final design must include any
trees within this area they should be small at maturity and be deciduous to at least allow some sun for the
southern por?on of the gardens. Further, we would encourage the use of fruit trees in lieu of ornamental trees
wherever possible.
4) As wildlife will be a?racted to the community garden, addi?onal considera?on should be given to either the
perimeter fencing or individual garden plots to keep such ‘pests’ from having easy access to eat the fruit and
vegetables being grown.
5) We concur with the removal of the internal parallel walkway along Righe? Ranch Road that currently exists to
provide more area for the elements currently proposed.
Thank you for considering these comments. We are happy to answer any questions.
