Additional Narrative (#1 of 2 ):
Battalion 1 arrived on scene with Engine 4 and established Cortez IC with ICP on the Delta side of the structure. Report on
conditions was a fully involved two car garage with possible impingement on the residents and fire units would be in the
offensive mode.
Engine 4 was assigned fire attack and 360. 360 confirmed conditions of a fully involved garage fire and confirmed that the
garage was a detached garage and no exposures were immediately threatened. Engine 4 also reported a low victim profile.
Truck 1 was assigned a primary search of the residents and later Truck 1 captain was assigned Division Alpha with Engine 4,
Engine 3, and 3471 working for Div A.
Engine 3 was assigned to check exposures and evacuate the neighboring residents.
3471 was assigned to assist with fire attack and overhaul.

Additional Narrative (#2 of 2 ):
I arrived on scene at approximately 0410hrs on 6/19/2023 in response to a request for a fire investigator from Battalion Chief
Ray HAIS. Upon arrival I observed major damage to the interior of a detached garage. No vehicles were in the garage at the
time of the fire. The garage vehicle door on Side-A of the structure had been removed. A V-pattern of smoke damage was
observed at the upper corners of the garage vehicle door, indicating the garage door had been closed during the fire. I
investigated the exterior sides of the garage in a clockwise direction. I observed a heat pattern on the exterior Side-B at the
A/B corner indicating the fire had burned the hottest in that corner of the garage. The heat pattern extended from the
ground to the roof. Soot was observed near an exterior light fixture on Side-B by the person entryway door. The entryway
door, removed prior to my arrival, was observed with heavy soot on the interior surface, indicating the door was closed during
the fire and the fire was slow and smoldering. Side-C of the garage shares a wall with an adjacent garage. No damage was
observed on the interior wall of the neighboring garage. Minimal smoke and char damage was observed on the exterior of
Side-D.
I moved to investigate the interior of the garage. I observed the left half of the ceiling had collapsed into the garage with
complete burn through of the roof at the A/B corner. I documented complete combustion of the lower portion of the first
and second stud at the Side-B wall. The depth of charring observed in studs towards the B/C corner of the garage and along
Sides -C and -D was less than that observed in the A/B corner. This indicated an area of origin of the fire in the A/B interior
corner of the garage low to the ground. Also in this area, I observed containers of paint, aerosols, a 1lb. propane cylinder, and
an open 1-gallon rectangular metal container, specified by tenant to be Danish Oil.
I spoke with who stated he had been finishing cabinets for his camper van with a Danish Oil product the previous
evening 6/18/2023. stated he left oiled textile materials, including a t-shirt and two rags on the ground next to an
open 1-gallon container of Danish oil at approximately 2030hrs in the A/B interior corner of the garage. Also in the area was
unfinished wood, a filled trash bag, an unplugged jigsaw and drill. Another tenant,, later stated there were
boxes of photographs, a car seat, camping materials, and other items including fuel cans, also stored in the area.
I returned to the site the same morning at approximately 1130hrs to observe electrical wiring in the garage with permission
from tenant An electrical outlet was observed on Side-B approximately 4 feet from the person entryway door at
corner B/C. From soot patterns and charring of the electrical outlet, it did not appear anything was plugged into this
electrical outlet at the time of the fire. Additionally, wiring from the garage door opener was observed halfway along the
beam above the vehicle door. Per the responding PG & E representative, the bottom breaker on the electrical panel had
been tripped and he had switched the breaker off prior to my arrival on scene earlier that morning. The bottom breaker is
unlabeled but is presumed to be for the garage. I ruled out electrical wiring as a cause of the fire. Additionally, there is no
natural gas plumbed to the garage. Per Weather Underground, the temperature was in the mid- to high- 50F range with light
wind from 8pm on 6/18/23 to 4am 6/19/23.
From my experience and training I believe the area of origin was the interior A/B corner of the garage and the ignition source
was likely spontaneous combustion of the wood oil saturated textiles. In combination with the other combustible materials
stored in the area, this is a competent ignition source. I believe the fire was accidental in nature.
