From :Carter, Andrew Sent:Sunday, November 18, 2012 1 :15 PM To : Grimes, Maev e bject :FW : Proposed lease agreement between SLO and CCA N er the last few years, I have worked with CCAN in the planning of an urban farm as part of the Calle Joaquin Agriculture Reserve within the city of San Luis Obispo . This project, often referred to as the SLO City Farm, i s i envisioned as a demonstration farm that will provide educational opportunities for K-12, the general public, an d local farmers on topics such as healthy eating, backyard food production, and sustainable farming . Thi s uesday, November 20 `h , the City Council will vote to lease this beautiful farmland to CCAN for the next 2 0 s . We would very much appreciate your support of the proposed lease agreement . A long-time coordinator of educational and agricultural programs for sustainable agriculture in our region, I a m convinced the SLO City Farm project will be popular with and provide lasting benefits to the residents of Sa n Luis Obispo . Given our rich soils, mild climate and on-going agricultural heritage, we are uniquely poise d nationally to showcase year-round local/community-based agriculture . The thought of having a thriving publi c resource of this sort at the gateway to our city is very exciting indeed . With many thanks for the good work you do and for your consideration of this appeal for your support , Hunter Franci s Hunter Franci s Director CAFES Center for Sustainabilit y College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Science s Cal Poly State Universit y San Luis Obispo, California • • 2
