SUBJECT: (Discussion Item # 7a) – Chong’s Candy Store sign and Interpretive
Panels
The City is undertaking a project to restore and
install a restored sign at the 871 Palm Street
parking garage in the Chinatown Historic
District. The sign being restored was from the
Chong’s Candy Store, which was located at the
Northwest corner of Palm and Chorro Street at
798 Palm Street (currently Anderson Realty).
The store was operated by Richard Chong (Gin
Quong – Chinese name) at that location for 28
years from 1950 to 1978. Prior to it being a
Candy store, the location was Chong’s Chinese
Restaurant that was operated by Richard’s
brother Addison and his wife Mary.
The initial phase of the project includes a layout concept with artwork, neon lighting
(to frame the installation), with the restored Chong’s Home Made Candies sign in the
center with the Chinatown Historic District sign mounted above (see Attachment).
Phase two of the project will include installation of interpretive panels on the history
of the site and Chinatown beneath the installation. The interpretive panels component
will also include engagement with the CHC, local community, and stakeholders.
At the meeting, staff will provide a brief summary of the project for Committee
discussion and to receive any feedback and recommendations.
