Members of the Committee,
I am writing to support the project located at 1220 Mill Street, San Luis Obispo, California, 93401. As the direct neighbor
of the property, I am pleased to hear that the owners of the property are planning to restore and rehabilitate the
property to its best use. I have reviewed the overall design and am happy to see that the current owners have tried to
maintain as much of the front-facing façade of the property as possible. In addition, I believe that the overall massing
added to the front of the house, together with the construction of the ADU in the back, is adequately mitigated by the
front of the property. I also believe that, similar to my property, the back has a limited view from the public walkway. As
someone who has lived and worked in San Luis Obispo for many years, I have witnessed the positive impact that
reasonable residential planning has had on the overall community. The proposed project at 1220 Mill represents an
excellent opportunity to further improve our part of Mill Street by expanding a single-family residence and creation of
additional rear housing. As part of a historical zone, it is sometimes difficult for owners to improve their own homes if
they do not have the means or willingness to do so in the right way. The Mitchells’ desire to improve 1220 Mill Street is
something that I believe will directly benefit the overall neighborhood. This proposal would enhance the overall
aesthetic appeal of the street while embracing the principles of smart urban planning.
Additionally, I am in support of my other direct neighbor at 1202 Mill st being removed from the contributing list. While
1202 retains some of its original historical nature, it has been altered greatly and is no longer a historic home. It has
metal siding for some reason, for example. I agree that being on the contributing list creates an undue financial burden
for my neighbors and is a barrier to them fixing up their home. As we have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in
our historic home it would be great to see my neighbors be able to beautify their home. They will maintain the essential
footprint of the home and can put the substantial funds that would otherwise go into the mandatory measures that only
historical homes must do into fixing up their home instead.
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. If you require further information or have any questions, please do
not hesitate to reach out to me.
Sincerely,
Heidi Harmon and Larry Brooks
Resident of 1214 Mill Street
