Dear Members of the San Luis Obispo City Council :
ce 1974 I have been on the faculty of the Crop Science Department (now Horticulture and Crop Scienc e
Department) at Cal Poly and, hence, directly engaged in educating people about agriculture and, in particular ,
As you know, next Tuesday, November 20 th ,City Council of San Luis Obispo will vote to lease farmland in th e
Calle Joaquin Agricultural Reserve to local nonprofit Central Coast Ag Network (CCAN) for the purpose o f
executing the vision that has been jointly developed over the past three years by CCAN and the city's Natura l
Resources Department . As a member of the CCAN board of directors, I would greatly appreciate your suppor t
~R
he lease agreement on this momentous occasion .
i
crop production . From 2000-2009 I oversaw the operation of the Cal Poly Organic Farm, including its produc e
subscription program which attracted literally hundreds of individuals and families to collect a weekly box o f
4 h vegetables and fruit . It was this experience that impressed upon me the general public's very high leve l
terest in connecting with the farms and farmers who produce their food . The Calle Joaquin Agricultura l
erve Project represents a unique opportunity for the city not only to contribute to satisfying this publi c
interest but also to support local agriculture . I applaud the good work that many people have invested in th e
project and in crafting the lease agreement .
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me .
Sincerely,
John Phillip s
