Whereas, The Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market was established in 1983 as a program to support the
Downtown Business Association members and encourage visitation to downtown; and
Whereas, The Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market has established itself as a premier tourist
destination, and brings thousands of guests to downtown every Thursday night; and
Whereas, The Downtown SLO Farmers' Market provides a platform for local farmers, artisans, small
businesses, and nonprofit and civic organizations to sell their products and communicate their value
directly to the community, thus supporting the economy, fostering entrepreneurship, and keeping
money circulating within the region; and
Whereas, The Downtown SLO Farmers' Market provides access to fresh, locally-grown produce,
serves as a vibrant, diverse, and welcoming gathering space where people can socialize, interact with
neighbors, and foster a sense of community; and
Whereas, The Downtown SLO Farmers' Market has distributed over $65,000 in benefits in the past
two years alone as part of the EBT/Cal Fresh Food Access Program thus allowing those experiencing
food insecurity to have access to nutritious and healthier food options.
Whereas, The Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market has partnered with GLEAN SLO, who collects donated
produce from farmers every Thursday totaling 26,354 pounds in the past two years alone that have
been redistributed into the community to those experiencing food insecurity.
Whereas, In 2023, The Downtown SLO Farmers' Market is celebrating its 40th anniversary of
enhancing the quality of life in downtown San Luis Obispo by promoting local businesses, healthy
lifestyles, and community engagement, contributing to the overall vibrancy and character of
Downtown and the City at large;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo on behalf of the entire City
Council do hereby recognize the Downtown SLO Farmers' Market on its 40th Anniversary and its
continuing valuable role within the community.
