Whereas, petroleum-fueled vehicles are responsible for over 50% of our local
greenhouse gas emissions and are a contributing factor to air pollution and climate
change, threatening the health of our citizens and the sustainability of our planet; and
Whereas, the transportation sector needs support to move toward adoption of clean
energy technology, including plug-in electric vehicles and bikes, that reduces our
dependence on foreign oil and supports a healthy environment and economy; and
Whereas, September 22 to October 1, 2023 has been designated National Drive Electric
Week as a nationwide celebration to educate our citizens about the environmental,
economic, and health benefits of plug-in electric vehicles and to promote their adoption;
Whereas, San Luis Obispo is dedicated to being a leader in the use of clean
transportation, including electrifying mass transit, installing electric vehicle charging
stations, establishing a 2030 goal of 40% of miles traveled in electric vehicles, and
initiating other policies and programs to promote clean transportation; and
Whereas, the SLO Climate Coalition, SLO County APCD and the Central Coast Clean Cities
Coalition are assisting the City and its residents to become carbon free by organizing
Drive Electric Week SLO events in our community;
Now, therefore, I, Erica A. Stewart, the Mayor of San Luis Obispo, do hereby proclaim
September 22 to October 1, 2023 as Drive Electric Week in the City of San Luis Obispo and
call upon all residents of this great City to join me in supporting the aims and goals of
this worthwhile effort.
