Good afternoon, I would like to submit my pubic comment regarding item 4.1 - 1440 HIGUERA STREET TREE REMOVAL APPLICATION, scheduled to be heard in the 10/23/23 meeting. My office is next door to the subject property at 1432 Higuera Street, Suite D. I also briefly lived at Suite A of the same property in 2021 so I am very familiar with the tree in question. I am expressing strong support for the removal of this redwood tree. We have 4 open parking stalls directly adjacent to the redwood tree and it is very common to have large debris from the tree land on and around our vehicles. We have also seen large branches come down from the tree in multiple directions. I feel that it is only a matter of time until a branch damages a vehicle, and potentially seriously injures someone. I frequently see young people sitting on the curb of our parking stalls adjacent to the tree as they take their work break from the Splash Cafe, Le Petit Soleil or one of the other nearby businesses that front Monterey Street. There are a series of overhead power lines near the tree, causing greater concern with branches falling from above the power lines. The loss of power would be a nuisance, but a downed live power line has the potential to be disastrous. It seems highly likely that a serious incident may occur in the future if this tree is left to continue deteriorating in place. Of course, the redwood is a beautiful tree, but it has obviously outgrown its landlocked planter area and has become unsafe to the adjacent properties and those who spend time near it. In my opinion, the various risks far outweigh the aesthetic and environmental qualities of the tree and therefore I urge the Tree Committee to recommend for its removal. Thank you for your consideration.
