WHEREAS, in 1872, Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of more than
a million trees in Nebraska; Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation
and the world; and,
WHEREAS, the City of San Luis Obispo celebrated its’ first Arbor Day in 1983; and
wherever trees are planted they add beauty to our City, providing a source of
joy and spiritual renewal, thus increasing the environmental, social, and
economic sustainability of our City; and,
WHEREAS, trees help reduce erosion and slow stormwater runoff, which
allows water tables to recharge our precious groundwater resources, reduce
heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce
oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife; and,
WHEREAS, the City of San Luis Obispo has been recognized as a Tree City USA for
40 years by the National Arbor Day Foundation and desires to continue its tree-
planting and Urban Forestry program.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo, on
behalf of the entire City Council, do hereby proclaim November 4, 2023, as “Arbor
Day” in the City of San Luis Obispo and urge all citizens to support efforts to
protect our trees and woodlands and to support our City’s urban forestry
program; and further urge all citizens to plant trees to promote the well-being
of present and future generations.
