As finished, the road -bed shall conform with the grades and lines Riven by the Engineer and to the cross section called for in the nlar.. Depressions stall be filled with additional and satis- factory material and watered and rolled as before. If neces- sary, cultivating, watering and rolling shall be repeated until the road -bed and subgrude are properly compacted. Pavement shall not be laid until the road -bed therefor is in a condition acceptable to the Engineer. SECTIUN 6. (b) The road -mix aggregate to be oil treated shall then be brought to a smooth condition free from ruts and irregul- arities and li,htly scarified to produce a series of longi- tudinal furrows to prevent the liquid asphalt from flowing off. (c) The liquid asphalt binder shall be spread at a temper- ature of between 1750 F. and 2250 F at the total rate of approx- imately 14 gallons per square yard at the rate of about } gallon per square yard of surface at each application, the exact rate to be determined by the Engineer. No more liquid asphalt shall be spread than can be mixed and compacted on the same day that it is applied. (d) Vixing. Immnediately following each successive ap-li- cation of bituminous binder, the oiled material shall be disked or harrowed with i tooth harrow until the bituminous binder shall he uniformly mixed therewith. After the final application of bituminous binder and harrowing, the material shall be • bladed into a windrow and the windrow bladed back and forth between the edges of the area being treated with a heavy blade grader having a wheelbase of not leas than fifteen feet (151) long, until a satisfactory mixture of uniform appearance is obtained. In lieu of mixing the material as above specified, an equipment other than that required above may be employed which will produce a complete mixture of the materials equal to that which, would be produced by the means above specified. The owner reserves the right to order discontinued the use of any equipment which, in the opinion of the Engineer, fails to pro- duce a satisfactory mixture. Should the mixture show an excess or deficiency of bitum- inous binder, or uneven distribution thereof, due to insuffi- cient mixing, the condition shall be corrected by adding selected material or bituminous binder, as the need may be and remixing the material to produce a satisfactory mixture. If necessary, the material shall. be harrowed or disked and all compressed masses of material broken up. After the mixing operation is complete and the mixed material has been approved by the Engineer, it. shall be spread to a uniform thickness b; a blade :radar or smoother having a • wheelbase not less Char. fifteen (151) feet long, and blading shall continue until the material ass a uniform texture and compaction, and the surface is true to grt,de and corss section. No Limps or compressed mcase:: of the mixture will be allowed 0 and, if necessary, the material shall be harrowed and disked to granulate the material thoroughly. The amount of m,:terial mixed in one day's operation shall not be more than con be spread and compacted in the same day. No mixed materials shall be allowed to stand overnight without compacting. (a) Rollin'*,. After the material has been spread as above specified, it shall be rolled and lightly bladed during the rolling with a blade Nader or smoother until thoroughly compacted. Any material loosened by blcadinr, shall be placed in a windrow and then respread evenly over the entire width of the surfacing. The enuipment unit used in compacting and finishing the surfacing shall consist of one (1) nower grader ecuipped with pneumatic tires and a ten foot (1C') blade and having a wheel base not less than fifteen feet (151) long, also one roller weighing not less than five (5) nor more than ten (10) tons. Rolling shall commence at the outside ed,•es and progress towardu the center of the roadbed; under no circumstances shall the center of the road be rolled first. Daring blading and rolling, all lumps or compressed masses of the mixture shall be removed and disposed of and the area filled with additional • material and arain rolled. The finished surface when ready for accept:,nce, shall be thoroughly compacted, smooth and true to grade and cross section and free from ruts, humps, depressions, or irregulari- ties. When a straight -edge ten feet (1C') long is laid on the finished surface and parallel wit!, the center line of the road, the surface shall vary in no pl;,ce more than one-nuarter inch (4") from the lower edge of the straight -edge.
