1. C;,ST I-JW PIPE AIM FITTIMGS
a. Pipe
All new cast iron pipe furnished shall be centrifugally oast, cast iron
Pipes Class 150, conforming to A.S.A. Specifications A21.6 or Federal Specifioatima
b'c'-P-421s in all reepects except details of the joint. The joint shall be of a
hell and spigot type which employs a single elongated grooved gasket to effect
thrr joint Seal, such as "Tyton Joint," or approved equal.
The pipe shall be coated outside and cement lined inside in accordance with
A.S.A. Specification A21oh, except that cement lining shall have a minimmu"
thickness of 1/16".
b. Fittings
All fittings, except where otherwise shown on the plans, shall be of cast
iron conforming to A.S.A. Specification A21,10, with mechanical joints conforming
to A.S.A. Specification A21.11, coated and cement lined as specified heretofore
for cast iron pipe. Fittings shall be furnished complete with cast iron Elands,
high strength cast iron tee head bolts and hex nuts and plain robber gaskets.
Flczged Pipe and Fittings
All flanged cast iron pipe and fittings shall be Class 150 conforming to
the requirements set forth above except as to the stare of the joint, All
flanges shall be American Standard, Class 125,. Flanges shall be accurately
faced. 'The faces shall be coated with white lead and tallow, or other suitable
preparation and ehall be properly protected during shipment and handling.
Caskets shall be best quality rubber patting not lase than 1/8" ttdc!c, faced
vith cloth on both sides; or an approved ostallic packing. All gaskets shall
be the Hall width of the fl2n„es to which they are applied.
d. Special Fittings
Special fittings and adapters shall be as shown On the plans, or approved
equals., All fittings used shall be designed and rated for a water working
Prassare Of not less than 150 pounds per square inch.
2. GATE VALVES
All Pte valves shall be designed for a :niairwu water working preasurs of
not less than 150 pounds per square inch and shall conform to requirements of
applicable A.;".W.A. Specifications. The valve$ shell be open to the left,
iron -body, hrawa-!munted, double -disc, parallel seat, non -rising stem with
0-sing stuffing beans. They shall be provided with mechanical joint, flanged
o^ combinat„on and connections as celled for on the plans.
Each valve shall he provided with a cast iron valve box of the screw or
slide type adjustment and with flared base. The miniaum t%lckness of the

Contractor during construction.
b. Baul.tng, Unloading, and Distributing Pipe
During loading, transportation and unloe.ding, every precaution shall be
taken to prevent injury to the pipe or to the wrapping of welded steel pine,.
No pipe shall be dropped from cars or trucks nor allowed to roll down skids
without =, per restraining rupee. Each pipe shall rest upon suitable pads,
strips, skids or blocks during transportation and mile awaiting installation
in the field and shall be securely wedged or tied in place. Padding shall be
used on car stakes and akids to prevent abrasion of the wrapping of welded
steel pipe during transportation and handling. Any pipe which shall be damaged
shall be repaired to the .satisfaction of the Engineer before installation.
F,acb suction of pipe shall be delivered in the field as near as practicable
to the plum where it is to be installed and all bells shall be faced in the
proper direction for laying. Pipes shall be distributed along the trench
opposite to the spoil bank within easy reach of the laying crew. Where noerssary
to move the pipe longitudinally along the ta^ench, it shall be done in such a
manner as not to injure the pipe or wrap. Pipe shall not be rolled mar dragged
on the ground. Where pipe is placed in stock piles, it shall be neatly piled
aad blocked with strips between tiers and with all belle facing in the aame
direction.
c. Trenching for Pipe Lima
The ditching operation shall be conducted by means of machine or hand
tool methods at the discretion of the contractor, as approved by the City
Engineer, along a routs as established by the plane and drawings. The depth
of the ditch shall be sufficient to provide a minimum of 30 inches cover
over the top of the pipe, except as hey be specifically designated otherwise.
Further, the ditching operation shall be conducted to provide uniform slope
gradients throughout the scope of the operation. No sharp breaks of contour
auf"Lont to cause disproportionate werpage of joints, etc„ will be permitted.
Tine minimum width of ditch shall be at the discretion of the contractor, pro-
vided that such width shall be, in the opinion of the city engineer, adequate
to conduct work of laying pipe, caulking of joints and compaction of backfill
below and adjacent to the pipeline.
The contractor shall determine the grade and/or location of all public
utility facilities such as telephone poles, power poles, gas lines, etc., mid
stall so conduct the work at all time to prevent damage to, or interruption of een..-
ice by said public utilities.

joint pipe shvall be thoroughly cleared to romwe oil grit, tar (other than

gallon o£ water. The cast iron ELM shall then be slipped an the spigot end
of the pipe with the lip extension of the gland toward the socket or bell end.
