I spent the day there today and experienced the crazy “free” hour parking system at the Palm garage. First, the young man there was quite helpful. But this is a ridiculously cumbersome, confusing system in a garage that doesn’t even have easy navigating for seniors with disabilities. And extremely small parking spaces. Then in one of our favorite shops we heard that the owner was very scared of having to close because her business is now down 50% due to lack of customers unwilling to pay the extra cost of parking and negotiate the ridiculous free hour system. She even offers a $12.00 credit for $100 purchases to encourage customers to come downtown and shop. The restaurant we usually have lunch at was uncharacteristically half empty, and waiter said business has been down. One employee said she walks from the high school parking lot to her Monterey Street place of business to avoid the extra cost of parking, adding extra time to her normally full work day. I say again: you are killing downtown SLO - a once lovely, dynamic, appealing shopping/dining area. This is a sad, unnecessary situation. We do not need another parking garage, if that is the real reason for this insanity. Patricia Stephenson Cambria 1
