To whom it may concern. Today my friend from Cambria and I, (from Morro Bay) did our
monthly trip to San Luis to shop, wander the downtown, and eat lunch. But first we had
to park! What a disastrous mess you have made of the whole parking garage situation,
not to mention the cost! Because we do make our shopping and eating trip every
month, my friend who drives registered her car and license with the city for the first hour
free. As the Palm St garage is the only one with the free hour option we parked there.
After descending three floors down, and back up, (no elevator) to get to the machine to
pay, we were fortunate to see the friendly young man to help us with the system which
can only be called a nightmare. It's not always easy to estimate how long we will be and
therefore could easily overpay, which of course generates no refund. If the time is
underestimated another whole process begins where the payer will be billed. Also you
have to mentally include the free hour which is somehow credited in the whole
calculation. Keep in mind that we are two ladies in our 80s, which while on the old side,
probably constitutes many people who want to spend the day shopping in SLO, and are
completely turned off by the whole parking mess to the extent that we will seriously
consider spending our time in Morro Bay and Los Osos, and at the shopping mall out of
downtown. And I will add that when we arrived in downtown today there were
practically no people walking in the core of downtown. At one shop where we have
gone for years the owner told us that their business is off 50% since the new parking
systems have been installed and rates increased. Even at Pottery Barn one of their
employees expressed their worry about lost customers. Is the city deliberately trying to
strangle the downtown and the businesses there that have made it a fun, atmospheric
place to shop and eat? If that's the case you're doing a great job! Patricia Reed, Morro
Bay
