Subject:Parking in Downtown SLO

Dear SLO City Council and Staff:
When I remember about the recent changes to the parking situation in downtown San Luis
Obispo, I tend to avoid going there. When I don’t remember, I find myself in a state of discomfort
and confusion when I arrive. Using the kiosks is awkward, time consuming, and expensive,
especially for people who don’t feel comfortable using apps. For individuals who don’t have
smart phones, including people with low incomes or seniors who don’t keep up with technology,
parking downtown is a nightmare.
Even for people who can navigate the confusing system, it’s unpleasant and time consuming. It
makes me consider going out to eat outside of the downtown corridor. It discourages me from
meeting friends downtown. I can imagine tourists being really confused and deciding not to come
back to downtown San Luis Obispo.
I love our downtown and I’m all for supporting the arts corridor in downtown SLO, but I’m
disenchanted with the solution that the City has come up with to fund it. I worry that if parking
isn’t made easier and less expensive soon, our once thriving downtown will suffer more than what
we are already witnessing with the closure of stores.
Sincerely,
Marta Peluso
