Dear City Council, mayor and other relevant parties,
I've been a residential property owner in San Luis Obispo since '87 and lived in San Luis since '82.
I appreciate many of the improvements our public servants have made in oversight improving the quality of our Lives,
but today I am writing extremely UNHAPPY about the recent change in DOWNTOWN PARKING.
I for one will be boycotting using any of the businesses downtown because of the expense and especially the difficulty
factor of these new pay stations.
It is an intrusion of privacy to have to put in the amount of personal information required and to have to return to one's
car which at times is parked fairly far away. There can be several people waiting in line, it's just not an efficient or
friendly system! I will be, as much as possible, patronizing stores, businesses and restaurants outside of the downtown
of San Luis Obispo and choosing to walk if I am. As a homeowner in the downtown area, I already suffer from the recent
ADU permissions and nearby businesses who attract many patrons as well as their own employees, who are not
required to provide parking to accommodate their use. It is incredulous to me that when I wanted to add one more
bedroom in 2005, the city was going to require me to bulldoze my backyard in order to provide off Street parking. Now,
there seems to be the complete disregard for density issues. If I understand correctly there are no longer any limits on
how many people can live in one residence. The quality of life in downtown has greatly suffered in my experience. But I
digress.
I myself had a business downtown and supported the city by paying many a parking fine. So I find it extremely difficult to
see how the business is downtown can be in favor of this change. I say again, especially odious to me is the invasion of
privacy. Don't we all find some concern about being tracked, everywhere we go?! "Power corrupts..." It's too tempting
to put this kind of control and anyone's hands. For any of us who've been around any length of time, history
shows/proves it WILL be misused.
I do ask you to reconsider this cumbersome and deterring scheme and find a solution that makes our town friendly again
and gives ease to patrons.
Sincerely,
Pamela Porter,
Islay Street SLO
