Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Dear SLO City Council, I know businesses say their suffering, and people say they aren't visiting downtown enough, but is parking really to blame??? I am not convinced. The cost of everything has gone up--my $10 burrito is now $15; dinner with the family is now $100 instead of $60. I am saddened to see a few local businesses and a vocal minority of citizens blame the small increase in the cost of parking for their frustrations with macro economic trends of rampant inflation, stagnant wage growth, and the end of low interest rates. The city's data are mixed and we need a stronger longitudinal comparison with other downtowns, and areas of town with free parking. Meanwhile, it only seems fair that the city recoup their costs and honor their debt to pay for the new parking garage. I would rather see the city maintain steadfast to its climate goals, debt obligations, and keep any excess funds for a rainy day. I visit downtown just as much as before, but now a little more often by bike or ride-share, and when I do, I see lines out the parking garage waiting to pay the "exorbitant rates." Giving into these demands for first hour free or a reduction in the cost of parking will result in more single occupant vehicle trips, fewer available parking spots, and you'll be back to people complaining about lack of parking. Instead, please continue to lead on sustainability and maintain your focus on improving public transit, and safe active transportation options. Thank you for all you do, Trent SLO city resident Laguna Lake Neighborhood 1
