Dear Members of the City Council,
As a long ?me resident of the city of San Luis Obispo, I am wri?ng to urge the Council to substan?ally reduce parking
rates for both street parking (currently $4.00 per hour) and the city parking structures (currently $3.00 per hour).
Current San Luis Obispo city parking rates far exceed rates in Paso Robles, Santa Barbara, Walnut Creek, Carmel, Santa
Monica, Chico, and many other California ci?es.
The current parking rate schedules in San Luis Obispo result in fewer local residents frequen?ng downtown businesses.
At current street parking rates a leisurely dinner at a downtown restaurant costs between $8.00 and $12.00!! The
parking structure cost is between $6.00 and $9.00, absent the use of a resident permit in the Palm Street structure. A
one to two hour stop at the downtown Apple Store to purchase or trouble shoot a product can cost $4 to $8 for parking.
This is no way to run a city that desires a thriving downtown.
I propose that the City Council adopt a new parking fee policy with the following elements:
(1) Downtown parking meter rates of $2.00 per hour.
(2) Parking structure rates of $2.00 per hour with the first hour free.
(3) Free downtown metered parking and parking structure parking a?er 6 pm daily,
including weekends.
Sincerely,
Dan Bertozzi Jr
