To the city council of San Luis Obispo,
This is to voice my serious concern that the new parking system will deter so many people from shopping downtown it
will devolve into cheap stores and empty store fronts. The last ?me I used the parking garage there was a line with 9 or
10 people wai?ng to use the machine to pay for parking. Several people were new to the machine and couldn’t figure it
out. It took a very long ?me and was quite frustra?ng.
Furthermore parking costs so much now it’s not feasible to go for coffee or just to to browse in a book store. The owner
of my favorite clothing store, the only one le? for women my age, is seriously concerned that the parking situa?on may
force her to close the shop.
It’s hard to believe a?er all we did to prevent shopping areas from being built in other parts of town in order to protect
the downtown, that the city council has adopted such an offensive parking system. It’s too expensive, too ?me
consuming and forces one to declare in advance how long the parking will be needed. What happened to browsing,
discovering new opportuni?es, long lunches, chance encounters that could keep someone downtown way longer than
expected?
It’s ?me to admit that it was not sufficiently thought through, and will be the death of the very thing that's made the city
so charming. Please reconsider before we lose something iconic and valuable to the community, in fact to the en?re
county.
Sincerely,
Susan Dodd
