To Whom it May Concern,
I have been a resident of San Luis Obispo since 2019- I attended Cal Poly for four years and made the
decision to stay in San Luis Obispo post graduation. This choice was largely due to how much I love the city-
close proximity to the beach and open spaces in nature, minimal to no trash on sidewalks and roads, and the
community of people who make SLO what it is. A large contributor to this is Downtown San Luis Obispo- it is a
safe place to walk around and has its own unique charm due to the high amount of local businesses. For the
past few years I have loved meeting friends there, whether for coffee at Kruzbergs or the Farmer’s Market on
Thursday night.
With the increase in parking prices, my ( and many other’s) ability to spend time in our beloved downtown has
been hindered. We want to be able to support our local businesses, however spending more money to park
downtown than we actually spend while we are there makes trips to downtown less and less frequent. As
young adults/ students money is very tight- as a college-student heavy town there are thousands of others
living in the city that likely share the same sentiments as me.
I am voicing my thoughts to you today to help urge you to reconsider the prices of parking downtown. There
could be a happy compromise- “slo-locals” discounts where people living within a SLO zip code can get a pass
with discounted rate, or flex times where rates are higher during times of higher demand and lower during
times of lower demand for parking. I miss spending time in Downtown SLO, and I wish this wasn’t due to
finances.
I hope you will consider my stance and make changes to reflect with the citizens of San Luis Obispo are asking
for.
Sincerely,
Rachel Wright
San Luis Obispo resident
