Hello,
As a resident of San Luis Obispo for over 30 years, I am wri?ng to express my opinion that the parking rate increases have
and will exasperate a some?mes frustrated community of poten?al shoppers. I love our downtown and o?en choose to
go there above other places for meals and shopping. When I ask friends to meet me downtown, parking is an issue for
them and o?en I get outvoted to go somewhere that isn’t downtown where there’s be?er parking and it’s free.
Especially since now patrons are charged past 6 o’clock into the evening and on Sundays all day, and the rates have
significantly increased. I wrote a le?er in June opposing the increase in rates and hours, because I love our town and feel
strongly this is the wrong direc?on.
With our cherished locally owned businesses already struggling to make ends meet, I would expect that the city Council
would do everything possible to make it easy for people to come downtown and shop. I’m sure rates could be passed
onto the consumers in other ways. The hassle and cost of parking is definitely one that a lot of people seem to talk
about.
What I love most about our downtown is our small locally owned businesses and restaurants. The increase in rates and
hours we all have to pay for parking will discourage people from shopping downtown, pu?ng small businesses out of
business. I don't want to see more big corpora?ons moving in, and at worst, more vacant buildings.
The city has been on the right track with the ongoing displays and ac?vi?es in the mission plaza, as well as the parklets.
Please keep focused on the unique wonderful personality our downtown has by reevalua?ng your parking policies, so
that id doesn't deter consumers and us locals.
Thank you for all of you that you do.
Denise Jenkins
