My name is Russ Gordon. I live at 19 Chuparrosa Drive in SLO. I am
here representing myself, my wife, Jeanie, and next -door neighbors
Gary and Carolyn Weyel at 25 Chuparrosa Drive. Jeanie and I have been
residents of SLO for 32 years; Gary and Carolyn for 14 years. We are
here because the development immediately behind our two homes has
recently created not one but two pickleball courts a mere 12 feet from
Gary and Carolyn's main bedroom and only 20 feet from our main
bedroom and living area. Thus, we are regularly subjected to the very
disturbing and loud noise that pickleball games create, along with the
verbal yells and occasional expletives of the players themselves. We
have attempted to resolve this issue through several conversations with
representatives of this development's HOA Board. We engaged the
efforts of Creative Mediation. We consulted with the Code
Enforcement personnel of the city. And yet the obnoxious sounds of
pickleball play continue. The Code Enforcement officials re,Uet that
we make you aware of our plight. Thus, Gary and Carolyn, Jeanie and I,
ask you to direct the Code Enforcement Office of the City to enforce the
municipal code as written and to amend it to specifically deal with the
unique noise that pickleball makes. Hundreds of other cities in the U.S.
are doing just that. Studies have shown that pickleball courts with
sound mitigation should be at least 150 feet from residential homes to
prevent disturbance. Without sound mitigation, the distance between
pickleball courts and homes should be 500 feet. As a reminder, the
courts I am referring to are 12 feet from Gary and Carolyn's home.
You have already received an excellent summary of our concerns Gary
and Carolyn have submitted to you. We trust that you have read it and
understand that we have good cause to be here. All we want is a return
to the peace and quiet of our neighborhood as assured us in the San
Luis Obispo Municipal Code.
